The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a convincing win, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
