The speculation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
